Beloved of Christ!
In the Book of Joshua, amidst the grand narrative of God’s people entering the Promised Land, we encounter a moment of profound significance:
“Then Joshua built on Mount Ebal an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel… Joshua read all the words of the law… just as it is written in the Book of the Law. There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners who lived among them” (Joshua 8).
Joshua, the courageous leader navigating a landscape of battles and victories, paused to build an altar and delve into the depths of God’s Word with the assembled multitude. This seemingly inconvenient juncture for scholarly pursuits held a profound purpose – it was a preparation for what lay ahead, a reminder of their covenant with the Almighty, and a reinforcement of their role in the divine narrative.
As we reflect on this ancient narrative, it might initially seem out of place to discuss it post-Easter, after the poignant events of the cross and resurrection. Yet, the story of Joshua’s commitment to God’s Word holds timeless relevance. It reminds us that beyond the decisive victory at Calvary, our journey as believers is marked by ongoing battles – battles of faith, perseverance, and witness in a world that often challenges our convictions.
Consider the post-resurrection encounters of Jesus with His disciples. He didn’t merely revel in the triumph of Easter Sunday; He walked alongside His followers, engaging in profound discussions and illuminating the Scriptures’ truths. In Luke 24, we witness Jesus unfolding the Scriptures concerning Himself to His disciples, shaping their understanding and fortifying their resolve for the mission ahead.
In these moments, both Joshua and Jesus exemplify the timeless truth that time spent in God’s Word is never wasted. It is a preparation for life’s battles, a source of strength and guidance in navigating the complexities of faith and discipleship.
Therefore, let us embrace a consistent rhythm of engaging with God’s Word, not just in moments of crisis but as a daily discipline. The insights gleaned, the truths internalized, and the faith strengthened through this practice equip us for the journey ahead, ensuring that every step we take is grounded in the wisdom and promises of our Creator.
As we walk in the footsteps of these faithful leaders, let us remember that every moment invested in God’s Word is a moment well-spent, shaping us into vessels of His grace and ambassadors of His Kingdom. Amen.
Peace and Easter Blessings,
